Probiotics and stress
Explore what research says about probiotics for stress, and where the evidence is still limited.

What it does
The gut and brain communicate through nerves and other signals. Researchers are studying whether certain probiotic strains can affect stress-related symptoms. This does not mean that every probiotic improves mood or that stress is caused by a shortage of gut bacteria.
When it may help
Some specific strains have shown possible benefits for perceived stress in studies of otherwise healthy adults. That makes them worth studying, but does not establish a reliable treatment for ongoing anxiety or exhaustion.
What to keep in mind
Results from one strain cannot be transferred to another strain or to a formula with several extra ingredients. A supplement should not delay help for stress that is affecting sleep, relationships or daily functioning.
How this relates to energy
Stress can contribute to poor sleep and feeling worn out. Addressing stress may help those symptoms, but a probiotic is not an established general treatment for low energy.
Changes in a stress questionnaire or a hormone level do not automatically mean a person will have more energy in daily life.

What to look for
The strain studied
Match the strain, amount and intended purpose to the research. A general claim about probiotics is not enough.
What the study measured
Look for improvements people can feel, not only changes in blood or saliva tests.
Other ingredients
Check the entire formula, including plant extracts and allergens, rather than looking only at the bacterial count.
Independent quality testing
Look for independent quality testing, such as NSF or USP verification. It checks aspects of product quality, not whether you will benefit.
What one relevant study found
A five-week study of Lpc-37 in healthy adults did not meet its main outcome, a heart-rate response to stress. Some other measures of perceived stress improved. It tested a strain, not the complete product below, and does not establish a fatigue treatment.
Before taking it
Ask your clinician first if you have a weakened immune system or serious illness.
Review plant ingredients and medicines, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
