Melatonin and sleep timing
Understand when melatonin may help with sleep and why it is not a solution for every tired morning.

What it does
Melatonin is a hormone involved in your sleep-wake timing. Your brain normally releases it in response to darkness. A supplement changes the melatonin available to your body; it does not replace time set aside for sleep.
When it may help
Melatonin may help with jet lag or certain problems with the timing of sleep. When it is taken matters, so the plan should fit the particular sleep problem.
What to keep in mind
It is not a reliable treatment for all long-term insomnia. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, a structured treatment for sleep habits and thoughts that interfere with sleep, is usually the first treatment recommended for chronic insomnia.
How this relates to energy
If poor sleep is contributing to daytime tiredness, treating the actual sleep problem may help. That does not mean melatonin will improve daytime energy for everyone.
Melatonin can itself cause daytime drowsiness. Ongoing tiredness, loud snoring or waking gasping should prompt a sleep assessment rather than simply adding a supplement.

What to look for
A clear reason to use it
Consider whether the issue is sleep timing, too little time in bed, repeated waking or another condition.
Amount and timing
Read the melatonin amount in one serving and follow the product directions. A larger dose is not automatically more helpful.
No duplicate sleep products
Check every sleep aid for melatonin, including gummies, drops and combination products.
Independent quality testing
Look for independent quality testing, such as NSF or USP verification. It checks aspects of product quality, not whether you will benefit.
Plant-derived does not mean risk-free
Melatonin from a plant source still needs the same thoughtful use as other melatonin. Its source alone does not prove better sleep or freedom from next-day drowsiness.
Before taking it
Do not combine with alcohol or use before driving. Ask a clinician about other medicines or sedating products.
Keep melatonin away from children. Discuss continuing sleep difficulties rather than using it indefinitely.
