Supplements for heart health

Learn what common heart-health ingredients can add—and why they do not replace a plan for blood pressure or cholesterol.

A heart-healthy eating pattern remains important when supplements are considered.

What it does

Heart-health formulas may combine omega-3 fats, coenzyme Q10 and plant extracts. Coenzyme Q10, often shortened to CoQ10, is a substance the body makes and uses in normal energy production. Each ingredient needs to be evaluated on its own evidence.

When it may help

A particular supplement may fit a clinician-guided plan for a specific need. For example, prescription omega-3 medicines can be used for high triglycerides; an ordinary supplement is not an interchangeable substitute.

What to keep in mind

A change in a cholesterol or other blood-test result is not the same as proving fewer heart attacks. Do not replace prescribed treatment with a supplement pack.

How this relates to energy

CoQ10’s role in producing energy does not prove that a combination containing it will reduce everyday fatigue. Evidence from people with a specific illness cannot automatically be applied to otherwise healthy adults.

Unexplained tiredness or reduced exercise tolerance deserves medical assessment. New chest discomfort or shortness of breath needs prompt care, not a supplement trial.

What to look for

A specific reason

Start with the health issue being addressed rather than a general heart-health claim.

The amount of each ingredient

Check combined daily EPA, DHA, CoQ10 and any concentrated tea extracts.

Medicine interactions

Bring the full ingredient list to your clinician or pharmacist, especially when taking cardiovascular medicines.

Independent quality testing

Look for independent quality testing, such as NSF or USP verification. It checks aspects of product quality, not whether you will benefit.

Tea extracts are different from drinking tea

Concentrated tea extracts can provide much larger amounts of certain compounds. Some have been linked to liver injury. The benefits and safety of drinking tea should not be assumed for a capsule.

Before taking it

  • CoQ10 can interact with warfarin and insulin. Review use with your clinician rather than changing prescribed medicines.

  • Check for fish allergy, other omega-3 products and overlapping supplements. Discuss liver disease before taking concentrated tea extracts.
