Supplements for bone health
Understand when calcium and vitamin D may help and what to check before choosing a bone-health pack.

What it does
Calcium helps maintain bone structure. Vitamin D helps your body absorb it. Food intake, movement, hormones and medical conditions all influence bone health; supplements address only part of that picture.
When it may help
A supplement may help when your food intake does not meet calcium needs or you have an identified vitamin D need. Review intake first so you supplement the shortfall rather than adding a large amount automatically.
What to keep in mind
Supplements do not replace osteoporosis assessment or treatment. A plant extract added to a bone formula does not by itself establish that the formula prevents fractures.
How this relates to energy
Bone nutrients are important, but bone supplements are not general energy treatments. Feeling tired does not identify a calcium or vitamin D requirement.
If weakness is related to a diagnosed deficiency, correcting it may help. Otherwise, low energy needs its own assessment rather than being attributed to bone health.

What to look for
Food plus supplements
Count calcium from dairy, fortified foods and other usual sources before adding a supplement.
The combined daily serving
Review both morning and evening packets and any separate vitamin D or magnesium.
Your bone-health plan
A history of fractures, early menopause or other risk factors may call for clinical assessment, not simply more supplements.
Independent quality testing
Look for independent quality testing, such as NSF or USP verification. It checks aspects of product quality, not whether you will benefit.
Calcium can affect medicine timing
Calcium can reduce absorption of certain medicines, including thyroid medicine and some antibiotics. Your pharmacist can help schedule them appropriately. Do not stop a prescribed medicine to fit a supplement routine.
Before taking it
Ask first with kidney disease, kidney stones or high blood calcium.
Review vitamin K-containing products with your prescriber if you take warfarin.
Check every ingredient in a combination pack, including plant extracts and capsule ingredients.
